SUNYAC announces weekly awards
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected its winter athletes of the week for the week of Dec. 7-13.Â
MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Lovell Smith (JR) Â
Buffalo State, Guard (Buffalo, NY/McKinley)
Lovell Smith led the Bengals to an 83-75 victory over Alfred University on Saturday with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while shooting 9 of 14 from the floor. Smith also had a pair of blocked shots. He leads the Bengals, averaging 17.8 points-per-game this season.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Alison Nunziato (JR)
Oswego, Guard (West Sand Lake/Averill Park)
Alison Nunziato had a career day for the Lakers as Oswego won its sole game of the week 74-57 over Cazenovia College. The junior went 9-for-15 from the field (including 5-for-10 from beyond the arc) finishing with a career-high 29 points. Nunziato continued the fill the stat sheet as well, collecting eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks. To conclude her impressive statline, the West Sand Lake N.Y. native also went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Trevor Hills (JR) Â
Geneseo, Forward (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.)
Trevor Hills scored three goals to help lead the Knights back from a three-goal deficit in Friday's 5-3 victory over visiting Nazareth. Hills netted back-to-back power-play tallies in a 1:31 span of the second period to tie the game, 3-3, before finishing off his second hat-trick of the season with 1:04 left in regulation to seal the Knights' eighth victory over its last nine outings.
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Devin McDonald (FR)
Geneseo, Goalie (Calgary, Alta.)
Devin McDonald registered 23 saves in Geneseo's 5-3 comeback victory over Nazareth on Friday night. With the Knights trailing 3-0 early in the second period, McDonald shut the Golden Flyers out over the final 36:44, including nine saves in the decisive third period, as Geneseo scored five unanswered tallies to clinch its eighth victory in its last nine outings.
ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Nate Skidmore (FR) Â
Potsdam, Goalie (Syracuse, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres)
Nate Skidmore stopped 34 shots in Potsdam's 4-3 victory over Johnson & Wales on Friday night. The victory was the first of his collegiate career in just his second career start.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Mackenzie Ross (JR)
Geneseo (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker)
Mackenzie Ross captured the crown in the 800-meter run and was a part of winning relay to lead Geneseo to first place at the RIT Early Season Invite, Thursday. The Knights swept the top-three spots in the 800-meter run led by Ross, who crossed the finish line in 2:24.22. She also joined teammates first-year Laura Russo, sophomore Lauren Bamford and first-year Hunter Gowans to take first place in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:11.81.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Diamond Jackson (JR) Â
Cortland (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East)
Diamond Jackson finished third out of 18 in the weight throw (11.76 meters - 38' 7") and fourth of 20 in the shot put (10.25 meters - 33' 7.5") at the Utica College Jen and Todd Hutton Invitational.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Michael Segelin (SR)
Geneseo (Irondequoit, N.Y./West Irondequoit)
Michael Segelin recorded two first-place finishes to lead the Knights to second out of eight teams at RIT's Early Season Invite, Thursday. Segelin bested the field in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7:03, which stands second all-time in Geneseo Indoor Track & Field history. He also ran to first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.84.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Dawan Jones (SO) Â
Cortland (Buffalo, N.Y./Tapestry Charter)
Dawan Jones won the triple jump at the Utica College Jen and Todd Hutton Invitational with an ECAC-qualifying distance of 14.05 meters (46' 1.25"). He also finished third in the long jump at 6.38 meters (20' 11.25").
