SUNYAC selects Weekly Award Winners
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York honors 12 athletes across seven sports with its weekly awards.Â
MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Justin Ringen (JR)
Geneseo, Guard (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfields)
Justin Ringen averaged 27.5 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 51.4% from long range in a pair of games for the Knights last week. He scored a career-high 33 points, including 7-of-8 three-pointers, and grabbed five rebounds at Potsdam on Saturday before totaling 22 points and grabbing six boards at Plattsburgh on Sunday.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Allison McKenna (SR) Â
Geneseo (Huntington, N.Y./John H. Glenn)
Allison McKenna recorded two double-doubles to lead the Knights to a 2-0 weekend in conference play. On Saturday, McKenna had 13 points and 11 rebounds in Geneseo's 75-32 victory at Potsdam. At Plattsburgh on Sunday, McKenna notched 17 points, 11 rebounds and made eight blocks to break the program record and lead the Knights to a 62-43 victory.
ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Shawn Hulshof (JR) Â
Oswego (Stouffville, Ont./Trenton Golden Hawks)
Shawn Hulshof played a key offensive role for the Lakers as they beat Brockport 5-3 on the road in the team's only game of the week. The junior scored his first career hat trick, which included the eventual game winner. Hulshof also scored a fourth goal that was eventually waived off.
ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Anthony  Marra (FR) Â
Geneseo (Guelph, Ont.)
In Geneseo's lone game of the week, Anthony Marra logged two goals and an assist in the Knights' 6-1 victory over Cortland on Saturday.
FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Miranda Fergus (SR)
Cortland (Millbrook, N.Y./Millbrook, N.Y.)
Miranda Fergus set a Le Moyne 1-meter diving pool record with her 11-dive total of 449.30 points in the Red Dragons' dual-meet loss to the Div. II Dolphins. Earlier in the week, she won both 1-meter (287.80 pts.) and 3-meter (302.95 pts.) diving with six-dive scores in Cortland's home dual win over Oswego.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Nancy Nasky (FR) Â
Geneseo (Brighton, N.Y./Brighton)
Nancy Nasky swept the 1,000 (10:33.79) and 500 (5:16.49) freestyle events to lead the Knights to a 141-97 victory at No. 16 Rochester on Friday. Her 1,000 time is the 18th-fastest mark in the country this year and was also a pool record. In Saturday's 153-131 win over visiting Oswego, Nasky out-touched the field in the 200 IM (2:21.86).
MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Arron Carlson (JR)
Fredonia (LeRoy, N.Y./Notre Dame)
Aarron Carlson set a school record while winning the 1-meter event Saturday at Trinity, Texas. His 529.95 points for 11 dives was 1.05 point better than the previous Fredonia school mark. Carlson also won the 3-meter event at Trinity on Friday with a personal-best 11-dive score of 560.85 points.
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Connor Mergler (SO) Â
Buffalo State (E. Amherst, NY/Williamsville North)
Connor Mergler led the Buffalo State men to a dual meet victory over Brockport with four first-place finishes. The sophomore swimmer helped anchor the winning 200 freestyle relay with a season best time of 1:29.02. Mergler also won the 100 fly in 54.33, tabbed a season-best first place time in the 100 back with a time of 54.55 and nearly broke his own pool record in the 50 free, winning in 21.18.
FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Kayla Koelbel (SR) Â
Cortland (Bradford, Pa./Kings Park (NY))
Kayla Koelbel finished fifth in the pentathlon overall, and first among Div. III entrants, in the pentathlon at the Cornell Upstate Challenge. Her score of 3,189 points currently ranks third nationally in Div. III. Her performances included ECAC-qualifying efforts in the high jump (1.58 meters - 5'2.25") and the 60-meter hurdles (9.27).
FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Laura Morrison (SR) Â
Fredonia (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield)
Running at the Highlander Invitational, Laura Morrison toppled Fredonia's mile record that had stood since 1990 (Jennifer McNerney, 5:09.14). Her time of 5:02.91 was also the fastest mile time by a female in Houghton's Kerr-Pegula Fieldhouse, which opened in 2014. It's the fastest mile this season in the SUNYAC.
MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jon Rogers (JR) Â
Brockport (Averill Park, N.Y./Averill Park)
Jon Rogers had two top ten finishes this weekend at the Ithaca Quad Meet. The junior took second in the weight throw with a distance of 16.55-meters as well as first in the shot put with a distance of 15.39-meters.
MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jake Alviene (SR) Â
Oneonta (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia)
Jake Alviene won a pair of events on Saturday at the Ithaca Quad meet where the Red Dragons finished second overall. Alviene recorded season best times in winning both the 200-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles. His time of 8.25 in the hurdles moved him up to fifth nationally in Division III while his time of 22.72 moved him into the No. 19 spot in Division III.
