SUNYAC announces final winter athletes of the week for 2015-16 season
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced its last weekly awards for the 2016 winter season. Nine athletes have been honored for the week of Feb. 15-21.

MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Lovell Smith (JR)
Buffalo State, Guard (Buffalo, NY/McKinley)
Smith averaged 31.0 points in a pair of wins to help Buffalo State secure a playoff berth on the final day of the regular season. Smith scored 35 points to go with eight rebounds and seven steals in Friday's 94-79 win over New Paltz. He followed that up with 27 points in Saturday's 96-86 win against Oneonta. Smith shot 63.6 percent (28 of 44) from the field in the two games.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Sabrina Macaulay (SR) Â
Fredonia, Forward (Newark, N.Y./Newark)
Maccaulay led Fredonia to two SUNYAC home wins over Oneonta and New Paltz. She had a career-high 29 points plus 10 rebounds in the Blue Devils' win over Oneonta. It was her seventh double-double of the season. Despite being in foul trouble, Macaulay had 15 points and five rebounds in Saturday's win over No. 1 seed New Paltz. Sabrina shot 62% from the field this week and added three steals and two blocks. Macaulay concluded the regular season as Fredonia's statistical leader in scoring (15.7 PPG), rebounding (8.6 RPG), and field-goal percentage (57.1%).
ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ryan Salkeld (SR) Â
Buffalo State, Forward (Virginia Beach, VA/Churchland)
Salkeld had five-point weekend as Buffalo State secured the No. 2 seed in the SUNYAC with a pair of wins over Oswego and Cortland. He had two assists in Friday's 3-1 win over Oswego, and then had a goal and two assists in Saturday's 7-0 win over Cortland.
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK - Cole Burack (FR)
Brockport, Goalie (Rockwall, Texas/New Hampshire Monarchs (EHL))
Cole Burack led the Golden Eagles to a 1-0-1 week after tying Plattsburgh and beating Potsdam to secure a fifth seed in the SUNYAC tournament. The rookie posted a 1.92 goals against average including three shutout periods over the two games. Brockport found themselves on the penalty kill six times on the weekend but Burack was unbeatable and stopped all 12 shots over the nearly 12 minutes of play. On the weekend, the Rockwall, Texas native stopped 77 shots. In the closing seconds of overtime Saturday, Burack made a diving glove save to deny Plattsburgh the win.
ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Tim Kielich (FR)
Brockport, Forward (East Aurora, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres (OJHL))
Rookie Tim Kielich tabbed four assists on the week as the Golden Eagles went 1-0-1 and secured a fifth seed in the SUNYAC tournament. The East Aurora native earned a helper on a game tying power play goal in the second period Friday as Brockport tied Plattsburgh. On Saturday, Kielich picked up an assist on each of Brockport's three goals in a 3-1 win over Potsdam. Kielich tied for the SUNYAC rookie scoring title with 19 points off of 8 goals and 11 assists in 16 conference games. On the season, Kielich tabbed 31 points and is the first rookie to reach at least 30 points since Bobby Garrison in 1996-1997.
FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK –Niasha Houpe (JR) Â
Buffalo State (Rochester, NY/William Floyd)
Houpe shattered the school long jump record with the best jump in Division III this season, winning the Brockport Golden Eagle Invitational with a mark of 5.79 meters. She also ran a leg of the winning 4x400-meter relay that set a facility-record with a time of 3:56.75, which in the ninth-best time in Division III this season.
FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Laura Morrison (SR) Â
Fredonia (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield)
Morrison, a senior from Wethersfield, Conn., broke the school and track record for the women's 1,000 meters during the Brockport Golden Eagle Invitational. Her winning time of 2:55.68 took down a two-year record held by Fredonia alum Kim Foltz. It was the third indoor school record set by Morrison this month. Her previous marks came in the 800 meters and the mile. She also holds the Fredonia 600-meter record, set last year.
MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Dawan Jones (SO) Â
Cortland (Buffalo, N.Y./Tapestry Charter)
Supporting Info:Â Jones finished sixth overall, and second among Div. III competitors, in the triple jump at the Cornell University Deneault Memorial. His distance of 14.36 meters (47' 1.5") currently ranks eighth nationally in Div. III and is an ECAC qualifier.
MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Kyle Jones (JR)
Plattsburgh (Sauguoit, N.Y./Mohawk Valley CC)
Kyle took fifth place in the 200 meter dash at the Utica College Pioneer Invitational, qualifying him for the ECAC Indoor Championships, and setting a new personal best time of 22.69. The Sauguoit, N.Y. native was also part of a 200-meter relay team that finished second, clocking a time of 1:31.83. Their time was good enough to bump them into the top-10 fastest times in the ECAC, and qualify for them for the ECAC Indoor Championships.
