Potsdam to add Track & Field program
POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam Athletic Department is pleased to announce that it will add men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field programs to its intercollegiate sports offerings. The programs will have club status for the 2016-17 school year and become full fledged NCAA Division III varsity teams in 2017-18.
Â
"This is an exciting opportunity for our department and college," said Athletic Director Jim Zalacca. "It aligns itself with track and field programs offered within the SUNYAC and with high school programs within our recruiting boundaries. We're looking forward to the formation of our coaching staff with the end goal of varsity status in the 2017-18 academic year."
Â
Potsdam will now offer 19 athletic programs, nine men's and 10 women's, with the addition of the indoor and outdoor track and field teams. The College will become the ninth of 10 schools in the State University of New York Athletic Conference to sponsor track and field. This marks Potsdam's first addition to its intercollegiate athletic programs since the women's ice hockey team was added during the 2007-08 academic year.
Â
The athletic department will commence a national search for the programs' first head coach immediately.
Â
SUNY Potsdam has offered intercollegiate athletics since 1947, though some sports date back to the early 1900's. The Bears have won five NCAA Championships and 20 SUNYAC titles in various sports. A total of 62 Potsdam student-athletes have earned All-American honors.
