Conference Names Athletes of the Week
BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), sophomore infield
Mike Weakley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), sophomore infield
Weakley hit .421 (8 for 19) and drove in 10 runs as Brockport went 5-0 last week. He crushed a two-run home run over the left-field fence in the bottom of the first inning of Brockport's 9-4 Game One win over Fredonia. It was his first home run of the season.
He also drove in two runs in a Game Two win and added three RBI¹s during a 12-3 Game One win over Oswego Saturday afternoon. He also played flawless defense at third base, not committing an error while starting all five games.
BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Travis Ratliff (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue), Senior
Travis Ratliff (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue), Senior
Ratliff threw the 18th no-hitter in Cortland history in the Red Dragons' 1-0 win at Plattsburgh last Thursday. He faced only two batters over the minimum in the seven-inning contest as he walked three batters, with one erased on a caught stealing that ended the game.
Ratliff is currently 2-2 with a 3.34 ERA in six appearances this spring. He has allowed 29 hits and has struck out 35 batters in 32-1/3 innings.
SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Plattsburgh
Erin Florkiewicz (Warwick, NY/Warwick), Junior, Catcher
Florkiewicz helped lead No. 15 Plattsburgh to a 3-1 week, hitting .545 (6 for 11) in the four-game week. She homered in each end of a doubleheader against Oneonta, and drove in six runs on the week, including singling in what proved to be the game-winning RBI in a 1-0 win over New Paltz on Thursday.
SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK - Plattsburgh
Ashley Marshall (Malone, NY/Franklin Acad.), Sophomore
Marshall went 2-0 with a save four appearances for Plattsburgh. In 15 innings, she allowed just 10 hits and one earned run (0.46 ERA). She also registered 19 strikeouts to go with just one walk. In the opening game of a doubleheader against New Paltz, Marshall tossed a perfect game, going five innings and striking out 10 Hawks, the sixth time this season she's struck out at least 10 batters. Marshall moved into a tie for second on Plattsburgh's all-time single-season saves list with five. The two wins give her 29 in her career, pushing her into fourth all-time in school history.
MEN’S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Plattsburgh
Nick Travers (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East), Sophomore
Nick Travers tripled his previous goal total of three to nine after a six-goal week against St. Lawrence and Morrisville. In an 8-7 overtime loss, three of Travers’ five goals helped bring Plattsburgh back into a tie against St. Lawrence, including the Cardinals’ seventh goal to send the game to overtime.
On Friday against Morrisville, Travers made it a nine-point week with a goal and three helpers as the Cardinals defeated the Mustangs, 14-6.
MEN’S LACROSSE GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Potsdam
Pat Corbine (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams), Senior
Pat Corbine gave the Bears two solid performances in net, posting a save percentage of .553 with 26 combined saves. On Tuesday, Corbine recorded 12 saves in an 8-7 loss against Clarkson.
Corbine helped the Bears hang on for their second conference win against Oneonta on Saturday. He made 14 stops, including eight in the second half, to preserve the Bears’ 14-13 victory.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Cortland
Ashley Cook (Commack, N.Y./Commack), Freshman
Cook helped lead fifth-ranked Cortland (10-1, 3-0 SUNYAC) to a 3-0 week with her nine goals and four assists. In a 10-5 win at Brockport, she tallied four goals and recorded four ground balls. In a 17-7 victory versus William Smith on Thursday, Cooke had two goals and two assists. She capped her week with three goals and two assists in a 13-8 win at Buffalo St. on Saturday. For the season, Cook is third on the team with 30 points on 23 goals and seven assists.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE GOALIE OF THE WEEK - Cortland
Ally Levy (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough), Sophomore
Levy helped lead fifth-ranked Cortland (10-1, 3-0 SUNYAC) to a 3-0 record last week, posting a 3-0 mark in the cage with a 6.40 GAA and a .543 save percentage. In a 10-5 win at Brockport, she stopped nine shots and followed with nine saves in a 17-7 home win versus William Smith. Levy then played the first half in a 13-8 win at Buffalo St., allowing four goals. For the season, she has an 8-0 record with a 7.95 GAA and a .524 save percentage.
MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE - Fredonia
Nick Guarino (Bergen, NY/Byron-Bergen), Senior
Guarino automatically qualified for the NCAA Div. III Championships in the 800-meter run with his winning time of 1:49.49 at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational on Saturday. His performance is a new Fredonia State school record and is nearly two seconds faster than the NCAA automatic standard in the event.
MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE - Brockport
Ray Lund (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) - Senior
Lund won the discus and placed second in both the hammer throw and shot put at Saturday's University of Rochester Alumni Invitational. He reached the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the hammer for the second straight week with an effort of 53.10 meters (174 feet, 2 inches). His winning discus toss of 45.12 meters (148 feet) is an ECAC qualifier and was almost six feet better than the runner-up, and is shot put of 14.65 meters (48 feet, 0.75 inches) is an ECAC qualifier.
WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE - Cortland
Abby Vander Veen (Delanson, N.Y./Faith Bible Academy), Junior
Quantity and quality were the hallmarks of Abby Vander Veen's weekend. Competing at the Moravia College Coach P Invitational, Vander Veen finished second out of 36 sprinters in the 400 meters and second out of 49 in the 200 meters. Her time of 59.84 seconds in the 400 is an ECAC qualifier. She was clocked in 26.50 in the 200. In addition, she ran the second leg on Cortland's winning 4x400-meter relay. The quartet's 4:01.63 was an ECAC qualifying time.
WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE - Brockport
Nicole Jones (West Charlton, N.Y./Galway) - Sophomore
Sophomore Nicole Jones, the reigning SUNYAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week, won the shot put for the second straight week during Saturday's University of Rochester Alumni Invitational. Her effort of 12.09 meters (39 feet, eight inches) was seven feet, 3/4 inches better than the runner-up. Jones also placed third in the discus (36.29 meters/119 feet, one inch).
