SUNYAC Selects Athletes of the Week; Seven Athletes Set School Records
It was a record setting week around the conference with seven schools records being broken, two athletes automatically qualifying for nationals and several athletes helped their team clinch a playoff berth.
BASEBALL PLAYER – New Paltz
Chris Paulicelli (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst), junior 2B
Chris Paulicelli (Lindenhurst, NY) batted .571 (4-for-7) in three games against Cortland this past weekend, helping the Hawks beat the Red Dragons for the first time since April 1, 1995 and qualify for the SUNYAC Championship Tournament for the first time since 2001. He scored on a double-steal attempt in game two to put the Hawks up 2-0 in the first and also contributed to the game winning run in the fifth, as he hit an RBI triple as New Paltz held on for the 3-2 win.
BASEBALL PITCHER – Brockport
Kyle Smith (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield), senior
Senior Kyle Smith (Sanborn, NY) had seven strikeouts in a 3-2 win against Oneonta bringing his season total to 72 and breaking the single season strikeout record at Brockport. The previous record of 68 strikeouts in a season was set back in 1976. Smith improved to 8-1 on the season with the victory and helped the Golden Eagles clinch second place in the final SUNYAC regular-season standings as the team advanced to the SUNYAC Tournament.

Aleesha Williams (Cheektowaga, NY/Pioneer), freshman DH/P
Aleesha Williams (Cheektowaga, NY) led the Bengals to a 4-2 week and helped the team secure a SUNYAC playoff berth, hitting .650 (13 of 20) and extended her hitting streak to eight games. She had three doubles, five runs scored and three RBIs, including a two-out walk-off single that plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh in a 3-2 win over Ithaca. She also did not allow a single earned run, picking up a pair of wins on the mound. In 10-plus innings, she scattered eight hits and threw a complete-game six-hitter in the win over Ithaca.
SOFTBALL PITCHER – Cortland
Lyndsay Rowell (Sandy Creek, NY/Sandy Creek), junior
Cortland junior Lyndsay Rowell (Sandy Creek, NY) went 3-0 with a save and 0.26 ERA in five appearances for the Red Dragons. She allowed only 16 hits, four walks and one earned run with 17 strikeouts in 27.1 innings. She opened the week by throwing a nine-inning, four-hit shutout in a 1-0 win at Brockport Wednesday. On Friday, she gave up four hits and one run with seven strikeouts in a 6-1 win at 17th-ranked Plattsburgh. On Saturday, she threw a four-hit shutout in a 6-0 win at Potsdam, then tossed 1.2 hitless innings to earn the 1-0 save in the second game.
Senior Craig Lange (Syracuse, NY) became the third player in Geneseo history to eclipse the 200-point barrier in the 19-7 win over Oneonta on Saturday. He has 204 career points on 98 goals and 106 assists. Lange scored one goal against Cortland on Wednesday but added five points verse Oneonta to reach the milestone.
MEN’S LACROSSE GOALIE – Cortland

Scott Tota (Webster, NY) helped lead the fifth-ranked Red Dragons (13-2, 6-0 SUNYAC) to the regular-season SUNYAC title with a pair of road wins last week. In a 15-3 victory at Geneseo on Wednesday, Tota made a career-high 13 saves and allowed three goals in 54:31. He followed up with 12 saves and three ground balls in a 14-5 triumph at Plattsburgh on Saturday. For the season, Tota has a 9-0 record with a 3.84 GAA and a .692 save percentage.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE PLAYER – Geneseo
Caroline Buonocore (Syracuse, NY/Westhill), freshman attack
Caroline Buonocore (Syracuse, NY) etched her named into the Geneseo record book as she finished the week with 15 goals in three games. Buonocore shattered the Geneseo record for goals in a season, setting the standard in the win over Oswego on Tuesday by surpassing the mark of 62 set by Maggie Morris '09. She now has 73 goals and four assists for 77 points, two shy of Morris' record of 79 points. Buoncore tallied six goals against Oswego, five in the 20-10 win over RIT and added four vs. Cortland.

Senior Ashley O’Brien (Penfield, NY) stopped 86-percent of the shots she faced and allowed just two goals in an 18-2 win over Brockport on Tuesday, clinching the second-seed in the SUNYAC playoffs. She followed up with seven saves in a 20-10 win over New Paltz on Saturday, making 19 saves on the week.

Fredonia State senior Josh Guarino (Bergen, NY) set a new school record and automatically qualified for the NCAA championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Penn Relays.
With 800 meters left in the College Division race Thursday night, Guarino lost a shoe -- yet continued to run without it. He proceeded to cross the finish line in 9:03.34, behind only Clemson's Ty McCormack with a 9:01.10, in a field of 16 runners, mostly all from NCAA Division I schools.
Guarino's time exceeded the NCAA Division III automatic qualifying time of 9:07. It also shattered the Fredonia State school record of 9:11.04 held by Rick Purcio since April 1984.

Mike Heymann (Tully, NY/Tully), senior - Plattsburgh
In the 10,000-meter run at the Penn Relays, Mike Heymann (Tully, NY) clocked in at 29 minutes, 55.37 seconds to finish sixth overall and break his own school record of 30:03.65 from last year's Bucknell Bison Classic. Heymann was also well under the NCAA Division III automatic-qualifying time of 30:10 to book his ticket to the NCAA Championships. He just missed the SUNYAC record of 29.55.14.
WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE – Oswego

Katie Bott (Camillus) earned a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a school-record and ECAC-qualifying time of 58.95 seconds at the Raider Open hosted by Roberts Wesleyan in Rochester on Saturday.
MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE – Fredonia
Broncho Rollins (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), senior
Senior Broncho Rollins (Ithaca, NY) broke a 24 year old school record in the men's pole vault Friday while competing at the Penn Relays. Rollins cleared 15 feet, 7 inches (4.75 meters) to finish fifth in the Eastern bracket of the men's College Division competition. The height is an NCAA provisional qualifier.

Nicole Jones (West Charleton, NY/Galway), sophomore
Nicole Jones (West Charleton, NY) won the shot put with a heave of 12.81 meters which is an NCAA Provisional distance as well as a new school record at Brockport. The old school mark was set in 1992. She also placed second in the discus with an ECAC Championship qualifying mark of 36.55 meters and fifth in the discus with a toss of 41.33 meters.
