Athletes of the Week Selected
The Athletes of the Week for the SUNYAC have been announced for the week of April 18-24.
BASEBALL PLAYER – Plattsburgh
Kris Cauchon (Colchester, VT/Colchester), junior shortstop
Kris Cauchon (Colchester, VT) batted .619 (13-for-21) with six runs scored and nine RBIs in a 5-1 week for Plattsburgh. Cauchon had at least one hit in all six games and went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI against Oneonta on Friday. He was a combined 8-for-11 with seven RBIs and four runs in a three-game series sweep of Oswego.
BASEBALL PITCHER – New Paltz
Chris Chismar (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst), sophomore
Sophomore Chris Chismar (Lindenhurst, NY) tossed his third complete game and third shutout of the season during a 1-0 win over Fredonia on Friday. Chismar struck out 12 batters in seven-innings to raise his season total to 67. On the contest he held the Blue Devil lineup to a .083 batting average, allowing just two hits and walking four.

Sara Morse (Painted Post, NY/Corning West), senior second baseman
Sara Morse (Painted Post, NY) hit .571 (12 of 21) with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored in a 4-2 week for the Bengals. Morse had at least one hit in all six games, and went 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI and slid into home for the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the first of two 5-4 comeback wins against Oneonta on Friday.
SOFTBALL PITCHER – Geneseo
Janine Montera (Deer Park, NY/Our Lady of Mercy), senior
Janine Montera (Deer Park, NY) went 4-1 in five appearances, including a 7-0 shutout of Buffalo State on Tuesday, a 5-0 shutout of Potsdam on Friday and a 2-1 win over #15 Plattsburgh on Saturday. She totaled 33 strikeouts in 35 innings including nine against the Bengals and ten verses the Bears. She finished the week with a 1.40 ERA and held opponents to a .209 batting average.
Senior Mike Tammaro (Painted Post, NY) tied a school record with nine points as Brockport rallied from a 7-1, second-quarter deficit to defeat Oneonta 14-13 Saturday afternoon. Tammaro handed out a school-record seven assists and added two goals as Brockport used a 10-2 spurt to take an 11-9 lead. Tammaro broke his old record of six assists, set earlier this year during a win against Medaille. Tammaro had assists on three straight Brockport goals during a 2:30 span of the second quarter, and also assisted on the eventual game-winning goal with 7:49 to play.
MEN’S LACROSSE GOALIE – Geneseo
Ryan Zaremba (Bay Shore, NY/Army Prep), freshman
Ryan Zaremba (Bay Shore, NY/Army Prep), freshman
Freshman goalie Ryan Zarembra (Bay Shore, NY) made 16 saves to help the Knights pick up a 10-9 win over Plattsburgh on Saturday. Zarembra made five saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the win and hand the Cardinals their third straight loss. He stopped 64 percent of the shots he faced.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE PLAYER – Cortland
Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga, NY/Onondaga Central), junior midfield
Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga, NY) had a record setting week as she helped #4 Cortland to three wins. Abbott scored 23 points on nine goals and 14 assists and recorded nine ground balls, 11 draw controls and seven caused turnovers. In a 17-8 win at Potsdam she totaled five points on one goal and four assists. In a 14-8 win versus Union, Abbott set a career high with 10 points on five goals and five assists, breaking the school record for single-season assists in the process. Abbott finished off the week with a game-high eight points in a 15-2 win versus Fredonia St. She also became just the fifth Cortland player to surpass 250 career points (164-98-262).

Running in his first meet since winning the indoor 55-meter national title, Xavier Mateen (New Rochelle, NY) guaranteed a trip to the outdoor NCAA meet, winning the 100-meter dash at Baldwin-Wallace with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 10.55 seconds. He also ran a leg of the 4x100 meter relay that blazed to a win with a provisional time of 41.27 seconds. Both times rank as the second fastest in Division III so far this season.
WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE – Cortland
Sarah Bonnell (Norwich, NY/Norwich), freshman
Sarah Bonnell (Norwich, NY/Norwich), freshman
Sarah Bonnell (Norwich, NY) won three individual events and one relay at the Cortland Classic. She finished first out of 17 in the 100-meter dash (12.65) and first of 27 in the 200-meter dash (25.82). Bonnell also won the long jump with a distance of 5.48 meters (17 feet, 11.75 inches) and anchored the winning 4x100-meter relay team that posted an ECAC qualifying time of 50.18 seconds. All three individual performances were ECAC qualifiers.
MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE – Brockport
Ray Lund (Thiells, NY/North Rockland)
Senior Ray Lund (Thiells, NY) won two events in the throws during Saturday's Geneseo Invitational. Lund captured the hammer throw with an effort of 49.65 meters (162 feet, 11 inches) and also won the discus 44.60 meters (146 feet, four inches) at Geneseo. He won the hammer by 19 feet, seven inches over the runner-up, and won the discus by 11 feet, nine inches over the runner-up. Lund was also second in the shot put with a toss of 14.63 meters (48 feet).

Sarah Timmons (Schodack, NY/Maple Hill), junior
Sarah Timmons (Schodack, NY) won all four throwing events at the Cortland Classic. On day one, Timmons picked up a first place finish in the hammer throw and qualified for the ECAC championships as she broke her own school record with a toss of 43.96m. Earlier in day one she captured yet another first place finish in the javelin throw with a mark of 31.52m. On day two Timmons picked up where she left off, winning both the shot and discus throws. Her toss of 11.21m in the shot qualified her for the SUNYAC championships and her spinning heave of 40.24m in the discus was just a little over a meter shy of hitting the NCAA provisional mark of 41.50m.
