Geneseo Men and Women Claim Outdoor Track and Field Championship
BROCKPORT – The Geneseo men’s and women’s outdoor track and field team claimed the 2010 State University of New York Athletic Conference Championship at SUNY Brockport. The Geneseo men scored 213 points to hold off second-place Cortland (148.50). In the women’s competition, Geneseo scored 176 points to distance themselves from second-place Cortland (160).
Buffalo State’s Justin Allen (Mt. Vernon/Mt. Vernon) was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete and Ray Lund (Thiells/North Rockland) of Brockport was the Most Outstanding Male Field Athlete. On the women’s side, Latoya Edwards (Brooklyn/Clara Barton) of Buffalo State was the Most Outstanding Track Athlete while Oneonta’s Sarah Timmons (Schodack/Maple Hill) was the Most Outstanding Field Athlete. Geneseo coach Dave Prevosti was named the Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year.
The Geneseo men recorded four individual wins. Wenley Louis won the triple jump in 14.59 meters and the long jump in 6.86 meter. Lee Berube won the 5,000 meter event with a time of 15:11.74, while Ken Wickey won the shot put with a toss of 14.61 meters
The Cortland men captured four individual events. Kyle O’Brien (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) won his third consecutive league title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:34.01. Shawn Wilson (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) won the javelin throw with a distance of 49.85 meters. Schuyler Field (Queensbury/Queensbury) won the pole vault after clearing 4.40 meters and Joe Keleher (Newfane/Newfane) won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.55 seconds.
The Brockport men won three individual events. Pete Manktelow (Hornell, NY/Hornell) won the 1500-meter race with a time of 3:59.88. Ray Lund (Thiells, NY/North Rockland) captured the men’s hammer event with a toss of 55.17 meters and John Osucha (Corfu, NY/Alden) won the discus event with a 46.54-meter throw.
Plattsburgh had three individual winners. They were led by Ben Depo (Saranac, N.Y./Saranac) who won the decathlon with a total of 5,397 points, Mike Heymann (Tully/Tully) who won the 10,000-meter run and Dustin Scott (Ticonderoga, N.Y./Ticonderoga) who won the high jump with a height of 1.87m.
Also winning individual titles were Buffalo State's Justin Allen (Mt. Vernon/Mt. Vernon) who won the 200-meter and 400-meter dash and Ray Peoples (Buffalo, NY/Cleveland Hill) who won the 100-meter dash, Fredonia's Nick Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen) who won the 800-meter and Oneonta's Sean Wren (Delanson, NY/ Duanesburg) who won the 400 hurdles.
Buffalo State’s relay team of Allen, B.J. Murray (Rochester/Aquinas), Rawl Carew (Brooklyn/Canarsie) and Xavier Mateen (New Rochelle/New Rochelle) won the 4x100 meter relay in 42.10. While Cortland’s Eric Banks (Westbury), Zac Farnham-Haskell (Essex Junction, VT/Essex), Phill Wiltshire (Vestal) and Gino Bisceglia (Norwood/Norwood-Norfolk) won the 4x400-meter relay in 3:20.87
In the women’s competition, Geneseo was led by Marissa Liberati who won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:25.57 and Keisha Stokes won the high jump with leap of 1.55.
The Cortland women had two individual winners. Christi Nassauer (Mount Sinai / Mount Sinai) won the pole vault by clearing 3.26 meters and Nicole Schafer (Troy / Columbia) won the heptathlon with 3,899 points.
Oneonta was led by Lauren Brunetto (Fishkill/Beacon) who won the 800 meter and 1500 meter events with times of 2:18.19 and 4:58.92, respectively and Sarah Timmons (Schodack/Maple Hill) won the discus event with a toss of 36.44 meters.
Buffalo State captured four individual titles. Latoya Edwards (Brooklyn/Clara Barton) won the 100 and 200-meter dashes in 12.89 and 26.29 seconds respectively. While teammate Jessica Walker (Rochester/Aquinas) won the long jump (5.18m) and the triple jump (11.30m).
The Plattsburgh women had four individual winners. Stefanie Braun ( Dix Hills/Dix Hills) won the 5,000-meter in 18:02.99 and the 10,000-meter in 38:12.20. Jackie Boyea (Franklin, MA/Franklin) won the javelin with a throw of 31.93 meter. Shannon Young (Harwood, Vt./Harwood Union) won the shot put with a toss of 11.79 meters. Amy McCasland (Saranac/Saranac) won the 400-meter race with a time of 1:01.59.
Also winning individual titles were Brockport’s Stephanie Powell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) who won the hammer throw with a winning toss of 48.16 meters and Fredonia's Kate Brett (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) who was a double winner, winning the 100-meter high hurdles (15.44 seconds) and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:03.02).
Buffalo State's Edwards, Imani Richardson (Southampton/Southampton), Nate’ya Lassic (Poughkeepsie/Poughkeepsie) and Suzan Spence (Brooklyn/Canarsie) captured the 4x100-meter relay in 49.94 seconds.
Cortland won the 4x400-meter relay as Veronica Montrose (Clintondale/Highland), Mallory Baker (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), Alexis Fairbanks (Apalachin/Owego Free Academy) and Lex Grable (Pine Bush) finished in 4:03.14.
