Buffalo State Women Win Third Straight Indoor Track and FIeld Championship
Buffalo State's women's track and field team sprinted to their third-consecutive SUNYAC Indoor Championship, finishing 18 points ahead of runner-up Geneseo in the today at Bristol Fieldhouse on the campus Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
Buffalo State was dominant in the sprints, placing 1-2-3 in the 55-meter hurdles, 1-2-4-5-6 in the 200-meter dash, and 1-3-5-6-7-8 in the 55-meter dash. The Bengals led the eight-team field with 124 total points, followed by 106 by Geneseo.

55-meter hurdles: Buffalo State swept the 55-meter hurdles led by Jazmin Dunham in a provisional qualifying time of 8.51. Junior Jessica Walker finished as the runner-up (8.57) for the second straight year and rounding out the top three was Reya Russell (8.58).
55-meter dash: Buffalo State junior Erica Johnson defended her title in the event with a provisional time and season best of 7.16. Cortland’s Sarah Bonnell and Buffalo State’s Nate’ya Lassic were side-by-side posting times of 7.26 and 7.27, respectively.
200-meter dash: Buffalo State took five of the top six spots in the 200-meter dash. Jazmin Dunham edged out defending champion and teammate Taniqua Hollingsworth by five-hundreths of a second to win her second-individual title of the meet. Dunham clocked a 26.11, Hollingsworth a 26.16 and Cortland’s Sarah Bonnell took third in 26.42.
400-meter dash: Plattsburgh junior Amy McCasland finished six-hundredths of a second ahead of Buffalo State freshman Jasmine Poles to win the 400-meter dash in a time of 59.60.
800-meter run: Oneonta junior Lauren Brunetto earned back-to-back titles in the 800-meter run. She ranked first heading into the event kept try to her seed with a winning time of 2:17.18. The Geneseo duet of Cailin Kowalewski and Kelly Brunscheen finished second and third in 2:19.20 and 2:20.43, respectively.
Mile: Junior Alyssa Smith won her third consecutive title in the mile with a winning time of 5:04.28, just missing an NCAA provisional time. Cortland sophomore Jordyn Naylon was a close two seconds behind at 5:06.11.
3,000-meter run: 2010 SUNYAC Cross Country individual champion, Geneseo’s Marissa Liberati won the 3,000 meters in 10:10.78, more than 11 seconds ahead of runner-up Alyson Dalton for Cortland. Liberati’s teammate Alyssa Smith finished third in 10:36.41.
5,000-meter run: Marissa Liberati led a quartet of top-eight finishers as Geneseo earned 25 points in the event finishing 1-2-5-6. Liberati is the 10th Blue Knight to win the event in last 11 years as she posted a winning time of 18:08.38, over 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Danae Polsin.
Shot put: Sophomore Nicole Jones became the first Golden Eagle thrower to win the shot put since 2006 as the Golden Eagles claimed five of the top eight spots. Jones threw 12.17 meters and teammate Stephanie Powell threw 11.56 meters. Also finishing in the top eight for Brockport was Kristine Hoover (5th, 11.34), Maggie Needham (7th, 10.88) and Stacey Gibbons (8th, 10.62).
Weight throw: Oneonta junior Sarah Timmons edged out defending championship Stephanie Powell by almost a half meter to win her first indoor track and field title. Brockport finished with 21 points in the event, placing second-third-fourth and seventh.
High jump: Oneonta sophomore Kacy Boburka and Cortland senior Kristen Serikstad each cleared 1.61m but it was Boburka who won the title on the tiebreaker. Serikstad was a two time champion in the event in 2008 and 2009.
Pole vault: Fredonia sophomore Chelsea Caruso cleared a height of 3.25 meters to win the pole vault as the Blue Devils also finished fourth and eighth. It is the first title in the event for Fredonia since 1999. Brockport’s Becky Fabino and Geneseo’s Rachel Serpe also cleared 3.25 but finished behind Caruso on the tie-breaker.
Long jump: Five freshmen from around the conference dominated the long jump, but it was Buffalo State freshman Jasmine Poles won with a leap of 5.27 meters, tying her season best. Cortland’s Sarah Bonnell was close behind with a distance of 5.23 meters and Oneonta’s Michelle Chartrand took third at 5.19m to edge out Plattsburgh’s Dionne White and Cortland’s Kelly Hugo, who both leapt 5.18 meters.

Distance medley relay: Geneseo won their 11th distance medley relay title in 12 years behind the quartet of Mary Aldrich, Rebekah Steinke, Cailin Kowalewski and Emily Sullivan in a time of 12:50.28. Oneonta took second in 13:04.97 and Plattsburgh finished third in 13:07.03.
4x400-meter relay: The Plattsburgh Cardinals, who finished fourth a year ago, posted the top time of 4:02.75 as Amy McCasland, individual 400 meter winner, teamed up with Jennifer Risler, Joanne TeRiele and Mahalia Ewers. Oneonta was one second behind at 4:03.55 and Cortland took third in 4:07.00.
