Buffalo State Men Win First Indoor Track and Field TItle
RESULTS
Five event titles and a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-meter dash propelled Buffalo State's men's track and field team to its first-ever Indoor SUNYAC Championship by a single point today at Bristol Fieldhouse on the campus Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Buffalo State won the 4x400-meter relay in the final event of the day to run its point total to 136 and edge second-place Geneseo, who placed fourth in the relay and finished the meet with 135 points.

55-meter hurdles:Fredonia was the only school to have two finishers in the top eight, but it was Buffalo State freshman Chris Rones who took the top spot with an NCAA provisional time of 7.77. Brockport’s Joe Mussler finished second (7.88) and the top Blue Devil finisher was Carl Caughell in third (7.93).
55-meter dash: Senior Xavier Mateen of Buffalo State defeated defending champion Durell Cull of Oneonta by five-hundredths of second to win his first indoor track and field title in a time of 6.42. Teammates Justin Allen took third (6.50), William Murray finished fifth (6.56) and Jalen Law was sixth (6.64).
200-meter dash: Sophomore Justin Allen defended his title with a championship meet record time of 21.76 as Buffalo State finished 1-2-3 in the event. William Murray clocked a 22.11 and Xavier Mateen ran a 22.26. The Bengals also grabbed sixth and seventh in the event with a 22.79 by Devon Rollins and a 22.81 by Rashawn Simpson.
400-meter dash: Buffalo State’s Justin Allen ran an automatic qualifying time of 48.55 to set a new championship record in the 400-meter dash. Cortland’s Gino Bisceglia finished second with a provisional qualifying time of 49.80.
800-meter run: The Fredonia State Guarino twins posted a 1-2 finish in the 800-meter, as defending champion Nick Guarino won in a new meet record time of 1:52.92. He already set the conference record earlier this year with an automatic qualifying time. His brother Josh crossed the finish in a time of 1:55.01.
Mile: The Fredonia State Guarino duo posted another 1-2 finish in the mile. Nick Guarino successfully defended his title in the event with a winning time of 4:12.07, while Josh Guarino clocked a 4:14.44, both NCAA provisional marks. Geneseo finished third-seventh in the event.
3,000-meter run: Geneseo had six of the top eight finishers in the 3,000 meter including first thru fifth, all within seven seconds of each other. Junior Lee Berube posted the winning time of 8:47.68, claiming his first individual indoor title in an event. Eddie Novara was the runner up in 8:49.29, followed by Ryan O’Connor (8:51.99), Tom Clark (8:54.36) and Bobby Henchen (8:54.97).
5,000-meter run: Plattsburgh senior Mike Heymann broke a 26-year old championship meet record in the 5000 meter run with a winning time of 14:34.98. He already set the conference record earlier this year with an NCAA qualifying time of 14:13.05. Heymann finished 40 seconds ahead of the rest of the field as three schools finished in the top eight. Plattsburgh finished first and sixth, Geneseo took second, third and seventh and Brockport claimed fourth, fifth and eighth.
High jump: Geneseo senior Mike McManus and Plattsburgh sophomore Dustin Scott each cleared 1.97 meters but McManus earned the top spot through the tie break. Oneonta sophomore Dustin Cox completed the top three with a leap of 1.92 meters.
Pole vault: Junior Ryan Pericozzi continued the Cortland dominance in the pole vault as the Red Dragons won the event for the ninth straight year. Pericozzi cleared a winning height of 4.85 meters, as runner-up Broncho Rollins of Fredonia cleared 4.70 meters. Brockport’s Zach Ferrara also cleared 4.70 but earned third place on the tiebreak.
Long jump: Geneseo’s Nwana Okafor leaped an NCAA provisional 6.99 meters in the long jump to stand first on the award pedestal as he followed in fellow teammate’s Wenley Louis’s footsteps and keep the title in the hands of a Blue Knight.
Triple jump: The last four years have featured a different school winning the triple jump, but Cortland hasn’t been one of them. But that has now changed. Freshman Aaron Green and four of his teammates finished in the top eight. Green had a winning a provisional leap of 14.50 meters, just one-tenth ahead of Buffalo State’s Jerome Wilson (14.40). Other finishers for Cortland included Kenny Sinclair in third (14.03), Will Razzano in fourth (13.96), Michael Ofosu in sixth (13.85) and PJ Flynn in seventh (13.74).
Shot put: A Brockport athlete won the shot put for the first time in three years, as senior Ray Lund threw a distance of 15.66 meters. Jonathan Jones of Buffalo State finished second with a heave of 15.52 and Golden Eagle Dustin Colgan completed the top three with a toss of 14.84 meters.
Weight throw: Brockport won the 35-lb weight throw for the seventh straight year as senior Ray Lund claimed his third straight individual title with a distance of 17.82 meters. Teammate Dustin Colgan finished second with a toss of 16.21 meters.

4x400-meter relay: Buffalo State set the sixth championship meet record of the day by winning the 1600 meter relay in 3:21.67. It beat the previous mark, set last year by seven-hundredths of a second. Justin Allen, who the 200 and 400 meter dash earlier in the meet teamed up with James Campbell, William Murray and Devyn Hollenbeck. Cortland and Oswego finished second and third.
