SUNYAC Crowns Four Indoor Track and Field National Champions

Four State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) student-athletes raced to individual national titles at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Capital Center Fieldhouse on the campus of Capital University, March 11-12. Five additional SUNYAC athletes earned All-American status as the conference totaled 13 top 10 performances.

Five additional SUNYAC athletes earned All-American status as the conference totaled 13 top 10 performances.
Buffalo State won three national titles on the weekend. Erica Johnson became the first Buffalo State female to capture a national title, winning the 55-meter dash, breaking her own school and conference record, and running the fastest time in Division III this season at 6.97 seconds. Her time also set a new facility record.
Sophomore Justin Allen blazed his way to a national championship in the 400-meter dash, winning by four thousandths of a second, clocking 48.27 seconds and senior Xavier Mateen also claimed a share of a national title in the men's 55-meter dash with a DIII season best time of 6.37 seconds. Mateen tied Phillip Jones of Dubuque to the thousandth of a second.

Fredonia State senior Nick Guarino won his third national championship of his career Saturday as he finished first in the mile at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field championship meet. Guarino defeated a field of nine other runners with a time of 4:14.23. He finished .81 seconds ahead of Calvin College sophomore Greg Whittle. Guarino also won a national title in the 2010 indoor mile and the men’s 1500 at the 2010 outdoor championship.
Geneseo, Oneonta and Plattsburgh combined for five All-America honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for placing in the top eight in their respective events.
In his third straight appearance at the NCAA indoor meet, Plattsburgh State Mike Heymann cruised to a sixth-place finish in the 5,000 meter run in 14:31.61 seconds. Solidifying his sixth All-American honor, Heymann improved after finishing seventh in 2010 and ninth in 2009 in this race. Geneseo’s Lee Berube placed seventh in the event to also earn All-America recognition with a time of 14:32.14. Geneseo senior Mike McManus earned All-America honors with a sixth place finish in the high jump with a height of 2.00 meters.
Oneonta junior Lauren Brunetto came into the meet 12th in the 800m run and finished eighth in finals with a time of 2:15.29 earning All-American honors in the event for the second straight year in a row. Sophomore Kacy Boburka entered her first ever NCAA championships with high hopes and held her own in the high jump. Boburka cleared a height of 1.66 meters (5’ 5 ¼”) to finish in a three-way tie for fourth place.
Other finishes for the SUNYAC student-athletes included Buffalo State’s Jessica Walker who finished tied for 10th in the triple jump with a distance of 11.34 meters. Christopher Rones also tied for 10th in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.70 seconds.

The Geneseo Distance Medley Relay of Chris Carter, Niko Brown, Kevin Bronson and Mark Streb finished in ninth place with a time of 10:15.16.
Cortland junior Ryan Pericozzi tied for 10th place in the pole vault with a height of 4.72 meters and junior Tomas Velasquez finished 12th in the long jump at 6.58 meters. Senior Gino Bisceglia finished 13th in the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash (50.64 seconds) and did not qualify for Saturday's finals.
Freshman Aaron Green finished 12th in the triple jump with a distance of 13.85 meters. The 4x400-meter relay team of Eric Banks, Zac Farnham-Haskell, Stephan Linton and Bisceglia was timed at 3:22.08, which would have placed them ninth, but the team was disqualified when the Red Dragons left the passing zone after a mishandled handoff between the third and fourth legs.
SUNY Cortland freshman Sarah Bonnell finished in 12th place in the 55-meter dash. And Brockport senior Ray Lund placed 11th in the weight throw with a toss of 18.15 meters.
