The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced the athletes of the week (Feb. 14-20) following the final week of regular season competition as the SUNYAC Championships are set to begin.
Ian Boots (Akwesasne, NY/Ohio State Univ.), junior forward
Oswego State junior forward Ian Boots (Akwesasne, NY) tallied eight points on two goals and six assists during 7-1 wins over Brockport and #9 Geneseo this past weekend. In Friday's victory, Boots tied the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal midway through the first period to jumpstart the offense before adding another goal and an assist in the third period. During Saturday's contest, Boots posted five assists in a six-goal third period with two assists coming on the power play and another coming while short-handed. The No. 1-ranked Lakers finished the regular season at 22-3 overall and 15-1 in the league.
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE – Buffalo State
Kevin Carr (Unionville, ON/Unionville), freshman
Kevin Carr (Unionville, ONT) recorded his third career shutout, backstopping the Bengals to a 3-0 victory in the regular season finally at Morrisville State Friday night, despite being outshot 44-20. The Bengals clinched third place in the upcoming SUNYAC tournament, their highest regular season finish in school history with an 8-5-3 league record.
ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE – Cortland
Joel Zangara (Buffalo, NY/CD Selects), defense/forward
Joel Zangara (Buffalo, NY), who has switched between defense and forward this season, scored his first two goals of his career in back-to-back games this past weekend. In a 6-3 setback to #9 Geneseo, he netted his first career goal late in the first period to give the Red Dragons a 3-2 lead. In a 5-3 win versus Brockport, Zangara scored the game winner with a one timer in front during the second period.
MEN'S BASKETBALL – Buffalo State
Justin Mitchell (Buffalo, NY/Bishop-Timon), sophomore forward
Justin Mitchell (Buffalo, NY) averaged a double-double (20.7 points and 10.7 rebounds) and shot an astounding 79-percent from the field, helping the Bengals to three wins in the week, pushing the teams winning streak to eight. Mitchell had 21 points and 13 rebounds, including the game-winning layup with four seconds left, in an 81-80 overtime win against Plattsburgh on Friday. On Tuesday, he finished with 20 points on 7-of-8 from the field and 6-7 from the line and grabbed 11 boards en route to a 96-83 victory over Brockport. He finished the week with 21 points and eight rebounds against Potsdam. The Bengals are the second seed in the SUNYAC tournament.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL – Plattsburgh
Taylor Amarando (Niskayuna, NY/Colonie), senior forward
Taylor Amarando (Niskayuna, NY) became the seventh player in Plattsburgh State history to hit the 1,000 career point mark with her 17th and final point against Fredonia on Saturday. Nine of her 17 points came from the free-throw line, where her milestone point came from with 32 seconds remaining in the game. The Cardinals completed a season sweep of Fredonia with a 51-46 win and earned the No. 7 seed in the conference tournament. Amarando also posted 20 points in a 67-52 win over Potsdam earlier in the week.
MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE – Buffalo State
Xavier Mateen (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle), senior
Xavier Mateen (New Rochelle, NY) posted an NCAA provisional time, winning the 60-meter dash in 6.86 seconds, .04 seconds off an automatic time, at the Cornell Deneault Invitational. He advanced to the finals out of 39 runners with a prelim time of 6.97. His converted time from the finals is tied for the fastest 55-meter dash time in the nation this season in Division III.
WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE – Brockport
Melissa Wassink (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili)
Junior Melissa Wassink (Rochester, NY) placed fourth out of 22 runners in the 1,000 meters during Saturday's Kent State Invitational. Wassink was the fastest Division III runner at the meet, and her time (3:05.47) qualified her for the ECAC championships. Wassink also placed 14th out of 48 in the 800 meters (2:23.22), with five second separating finishes 5-14.
MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE – Fredonia
Michael Kelley (Geneseo, NY/Geneseo)
Michael Kelley (Geneseo, NY) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III championship meet in the triple jump while competing Friday at Rochester Institute of Technology. Kelley soared to a winning leap of 14.16 meters (46' 5 ½”), besting the field of 13 competitors.
WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE – Brockport
Stephanie Powell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls), senior
For the second week in a row Stephanie Powell (Niagara Falls, NY) has been named the SUNYAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week. Powell broke an eight-year old Brockport school record in the weight throw during Saturday's Kent State Invitational. She posted an effort of 16.23 meters (53 feet, 3 inches) to place seventh at the meet out of 43 competitors, which featured Division I athletes. Powell cleared the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III championships in the event and has improved her performance in the weight throw in each of the last three meets, going from 14.12 meters to 16.23 meters during that span.
